Bilateral relations between Switzerland and Venezuela

Bilateral relations between Switzerland and Venezuela are good, but not particularly well-developed.

Key aspects of diplomatic relations

Political consultations involving the Head of the FDFA’s Americas Division have yet to take place. However, Switzerland and Venezuela have concluded bilateral agreements on investment protection, double taxation and aviation.

Economic cooperation

In 2011, Switzerland imported goods – primarily agricultural products and metals – worth 6.3 mln. CHF The value of Swiss exports – primarily pharmaceuticals, machinery and precision instruments – totalled 374.3 mln. CHF
In 2010 Swiss direct investments stood at 2,061 bn CHF and around 11,300 people in Venezuela were employed by Swiss firms.

Cooperation in the domain of education

Scholars and artists from Venezuela can apply to the State Secretariat for Education and Research (SER) for a Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship.

Swiss nationals in Venezuela

At the beginning of 2012, there were 1,780 Swiss nationals living in Venezuela.

History of bilateral relations

Switzerland opened an honorary consulate in the capital Caracas in1909. In 1939, it opened a diplomatic representation (first a legation and from 1961 onwards an embassy). A Swiss-Venezuelan Chamber of Commerce was set up in 1979.
