International organizations

Switzerland’s international ties are many and varied. Firstly, it is a member of an array of international organizations, such as the United Nations (UN), the Council of Europe, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the Francophonie Organization, which enjoy close economic, political, social, cultural and scientific ties with the European Union.
Secondly, Switzerland is host to numerous international organizations and conferences: Geneva is one of the world’s most important centres for international cooperation (“International Geneva”).
At various organizations Switzerland has a permanent representation, namely a Mission, or a permanent delegation.
The missions and delegations are responsible for implementing Swiss policy at international organizations in general and at the UN in particular, based on the instructions of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. In turn, these representations keep the head office in Bern informed of all major developments.
Permanent missions and delegations
- represent Switzerland’s interests
- participate in international negotiations and in the activities of the UN and other international organizations
- maintain relations with the permanent missions of other countries
The Swiss Mission in Geneva has the additional responsibility of implementing Switzerland’s host-country policy.
